The Baby Shower Cake!

So, some of you have heard that I was getting ready to make a baby shower cake for our dearest friends the Gilmour's. Their son and daughter-in-law are preparing to have their first child (Gilmour grandchild #1!). I offered to make the shower cake for mulitiple reasons. I love to make and decorate cakes, I knew it would be something great and special that they would love, it would give me some more experience in making professional cakes that I could add to my portfolio! This one in particular I paid more attention to as far as making it professional looking and beyond your average cake. I had a blast creating the design for it (all my own invention) and seeing it through to the final product. I have many mock-up drawing of it, too (from my mind, onto paper, then created in solid form). Obviously I enjoy making elaborate cakes, particularly for Andrew's birthday parties, but this was even more elaborate. It required much more prep and time to execute since it wasn't just a bunch of friends getting together to celebrate with us. I knew a few of the people before the shower, but only a handful have I spent more than a few hours with, so this reached a whole new genre of people. I hope that word of mouth will spread because I would love to turn this in to my business, so we shall see what I can make of it. Here are some of the images I captured of it, from blank canvas to final result! Enjoy!

Blank Canvas

Final Result
Each Letter represents the baby's initials and mommy and daddy-to-be's first initial
I made an animal that started with it's letter in the form of that letter

"E" is for Elephant

"P" is for Peacock

"G" is for Gecko

"J" is for Jaguar

"L" is for Lion

At the party, including the extra elements (all of which are edible) I created around the cake

This side has the bear in front of the peacock and the train wrapped around the side of the gecko

This side has the plane in front of the lion, the back end of the train wrapping around the side of the lion reaching to the gecko side, and the boat in front of the jaguar

All in all, I am very happy with the final outcome of the cake. I got rave reviews at the shower. The mommy-to-be said she didn't want anyone to eat it it was so beautiful. The Gilmour's daughter (who was co-hosting with her mom) didn't realize it was a cake in my hands when we came inside, she thought I had brought in a gift wrapped present. Everyone was astounded at how amazing it looked. Needless to say, I was very happy that all my hard work was noticed, loved, and enjoyed. They loved that not only was it an amazing cake but that it tasted so good, too! Hope you guys enjoyed looking at the pics as much as I loved making it!

I know we talked about it on the phone, but I wanted to post a comment as well. You really did an amazing job! I think the peacock is my favorite... I can't imagine how long that must have taken! I also think the plane is quite inventive. You really have a great imagination and talent for cakes. Hope you keep getting more opportunities to use that talent! Great job!
